Sustainable Salons

sustainable_salons

In an age where we use reusable coffee cups, straw, bags and water bottles, it’s no wonder that we are now looking for ways to make our beauty more environmentally friendly too. Eco-salons are becoming increasingly popular across the globe, with salons taking matters into their own hands and leading the way towards an eco-friendly hair industry. There are many ways to make your salon go green. Some of them require an initial investment but will save you money in the long run. Some of them are free and just require you to make it part of your salon culture.

1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The first step to going green is equipping your salon with good recycling systems to better organize your waste. Did you know that paper, razors, tools, aluminium, hair, chemicals and plastics can be recycled? Disposing of these items correctly can allow them to be reused or recycled for other uses. Companies like Sustainable Salons can help you recycle up to 95% of your salon’s waste.

2. Change your lights

Whilst having the right lighting in your salon is important for you to be able to do your best work and show off your client’s hair, energy saving light bulbs are an easy way to be more eco-friendly. Lightbulbs like LEDs will save energy and considering they last long than regular lightbulbs, they’ll also save you money in the long run.

3. Conserve water

Check your salon for leaks as slow water drips can end up being litres of water wasted each month. Try using water efficient products in your salon like a water saving shower head that conserves water, doubles the water pressure and is 100% recyclable.

4. Bigger washing loads, less often

Only press ‘start’ on your washing machine when it is full. This might mean that you have to buy a few more towels, but you’ll save this in the long run on your power bill whilst helping the environment.

5. Turn it off

Perhaps the easiest way to go green in your salon is to turn off your lights and unplug your appliances when you’re not using them. Consider installing motion sensor lighting in the break room and toilets or if you can’t afford this, just make it part of your salon culture to turn it off when not in use.
